Beef tallow cream and balm comparison 2026: price per 100 g and is there an official test?
The essentials in 6 points — updated on 12 October 2026
- There is no official “Testsieger” for beef tallow creams: as of 12 October 2026, we found no comparative test from an independent institute (Stiftung Warentest, Öko-Test, 60 Millions de consommateurs, Que Choisir, Consumentenbond). A German magazine states it in black and white on the same day1.
- What we publish instead is a market survey, not a test: 39 tallow creams and balms sold in 17 European countries, prices incl. VAT read from public product pages on 9 and 12 October 2026.
- Median price: 29.16 € per 100 g or 100 ml (middle half of prices between 19.25 € and 39.95 €; extremes 8.33 € and 77.83 €). DACH region: 28.20 €; rest of the EU: 37.50 €.
- The most common formula is anhydrous: of the 30 listings that allow it to be checked, 30 are blends of fats (no emulsion with Aqua); 28 of the 32 listings that provide the information are unscented.
- Size changes everything in the price per 100 g: median of 49.80 € for jars of 50 ml or less, 27.23 € for 76 to 130 ml, 14.48 € above 130 ml.
- Our four sizes are shown separately, with their actual price per 100 g (from 17.01 € to 47.84 €), and remain outside the statistics.
Is there an official test or a “Testsieger” for beef tallow creams?
No: as of 12 October 2026, no independent testing institute has published a comparison of beef tallow creams or balms that we could find, so the title of “Testsieger” is not officially awarded to any product. A German magazine wrote on 12 October 2026: “Bislang hat keine unabhängige Prüfinstitution solche Produkte systematisch verglichen” (to date, no independent testing body has systematically compared these products)1. This matches our own finding: a search on 7 October 2026 for “Rindertalg” on test.de returned no tallow cream test, and the one on 12 October only returns tests of other face and foot care products2.
| Source | Date | What the page establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Stiftung Warentest (test.de) | Search on 12/10/2026 | Tests of face and foot creams (for example 14 “natural” face care products published in 2020, updated in April 2026); no beef tallow cream test found2 |
| VKI / Konsument.at (Austria) | 26/03/2026 | A “Kosmetikcheck” covering a single trial set from one manufacturer, content reserved for subscribers: this is not a comparison of several products3 |
| German general-interest magazine (wmn.de) | 12/10/2026 | “Bislang hat keine unabhängige Prüfinstitution solche Produkte systematisch verglichen”1 |
| Öko-Test, 60 Millions de consommateurs, Que Choisir, Consumentenbond, K-Tipp, Kassensturz | Searches on 12/10/2026 | No comparative test of tallow creams found; the absence of a result in a search engine is not proof, it is a dated observation |
Why do we see “Testsieger” everywhere? Because the word circulates as a sales argument: some online comparison pages use it. A genuine test relies on a published protocol, measurements and an independent body; the only useful question is therefore to look for the source of the test, as our article on creams, balms and pure tallow reminds us.
How did we build the survey?
The survey brings together 39 beef tallow creams and balms from 37 brands in 17 countries, read from public product pages (HTTP 200 response, proof excerpt kept) on 9 and 12 October 2026. It supplements the 34 balms of the European Tallow Barometer 2026 with new readings, mainly in Germany, Austria and Switzerland45. Each line contains: country, volume, price incl. VAT, price per 100 g or 100 ml, displayed composition, presence of water, fragrance, jar material, organic claim and declared origin of the tallow.
- Price: price incl. VAT as displayed, promotion included; currencies converted at the ECB rate of 8 October 2026. The price per 100 g or 100 ml is calculated by dividing the price by the volume.
- Excluded from the statistics: FrenchTallow products, Swiss prices (price incl. VAT not established on the page), one British product (outside the EU) and prices excl. VAT.
- Anonymisation: the product-by-product detail (brands, page addresses) is kept in our internal database; this page publishes only aggregates.
- Missing information = “not stated”: we infer nothing from a silent page, and percentages are calculated on the listings that provide an answer.
What is the price per 100 g of a beef tallow cream?
The median price in the survey is 29.16 € per 100 g or 100 ml: half of the products lie between 19.25 € and 39.95 €, with extremes at 8.33 € and 77.83 €. In the DACH region (Germany and Austria), the median is 28.20 € for 16 products. What really changes the bill is the size of the jar.
| Region | Products | Countries | Median | Middle half | Extremes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Whole survey | 39 | 17 | 29.16 € | 19.25 – 39.95 € | 8.33 – 77.83 € |
| DACH (Germany, Austria) | 16 | 2 | 28.20 € | 22.60 – 30.82 € | 12.99 – 49.80 € |
| France (indicative: 2 products) | 2 | 1 | 19.21 € | — | 19.09 – 19.33 € |
| Rest of the EU | 21 | 14 | 37.50 € | 21.71 – 47.90 € | 8.33 – 77.83 € |
| Volume | Products | Median | Extremes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 g or ml and less | 5 | 49.80 € | 29.98 – 60.21 € |
| 51 to 75 g or ml | 12 | 35.41 € | 18.71 – 77.83 € |
| 76 to 130 g or ml | 19 | 27.23 € | 8.33 – 47.90 € |
| More than 130 g or ml | 3 | 14.48 € | 10.00 – 19.33 € |
In total, 11 products out of 39 cost less than 20 € per 100 g, 19 between 20 € and 40 €, and 9 more than 40 €. The most common volumes are 60 ml (12 products out of 39, or 31%) then 100 to 125 ml. The DACH region is concentrated on 100 to 120 ml; the rest of the EU on 60 ml (10 products out of 21).
Formula, fragrance, organic, jar: what does the survey show?
The typical product in the survey is an anhydrous balm (100% fats), unscented, sold in a jar of 60 to 120 ml; 44% of products claim organic on their page. An anhydrous balm is a blend of fats (tallow, oil, wax) that contains no water, whereas a cream in the strict sense is an emulsion containing water (Aqua in the INCI list). The percentages below are calculated on the listings that give the information, which explains the different denominators.
| Criterion | DACH (16) | France (2) | Rest of the EU (21) | Overall (39) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Anhydrous formula (no water declared) | 13 out of 13 verifiable | 2 out of 2 | 15 out of 15 verifiable | 30 out of 30 verifiable |
| Scented products | 2 out of 14 stated (14%) | 0 out of 2 | 2 out of 16 stated (12.5%) | 4 out of 32 (12.5%) |
| Unscented products | 12 out of 14 | 2 out of 2 | 14 out of 16 | 28 out of 32 (87.5%) |
| Organic claimed (on the page) | 7 out of 16 (44%) | 0 out of 2 | 10 out of 21 (48%) | 17 out of 39 (44%) |
| Most common volume | 120 ml (5 products) | 110 ml and 150 ml (1 each) | 60 ml (10 products) | 60 ml (12 products) |
| Jar material specified | 3 out of 16: glass 2, metal 1 | 1 out of 2: plastic | 4 out of 21: glass 3, metal 1 | 8 out of 39: glass 5, metal 2, plastic 1 |
Three practical lessons. First, the word “cream” most often describes a texture, not an emulsion: none of the 30 products whose formula is readable lists water. Second, an unscented balm is the norm, and scented products sit higher in price (median of 43.65 € for 4 products, a sample too small to conclude). Third, the jar material is displayed on only 8 listings out of 39: it is a criterion to ask the seller about.
How do you compare two products yourself?
Always compare per 100 g (or 100 ml), then check the formula, the fragrance, the jar and the seller's transparency; our 8-criteria checklist already details this. It can be found in the article “Beef tallow cream, balm or pure tallow” and we do not repeat it here. For sizes and storage, see buying beef tallow: sizes, prices and storage; for first-hand experiences, customer reviews and feedback; for the basics, the complete guide to beef tallow.
Where do the FrenchTallow sizes stand?
Our prices per 100 g, read on our shop on 12 October 20266, range from 17.01 € (150 g jar) to 47.84 € (50 g bamboo jar); they are shown separately and do not count in the statistics. The products are anhydrous balms made from grass-fed beef tallow; the price shown is for one jar, and multi-jar sets are cheaper per 100 g.
| Size | Volume | Jar price | Price per 100 g / 100 ml | Survey median for the same volume range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nature balm, large size | 150 g | 25.52 € | 17.01 € | 14.48 € above 130 g or ml (3 products: 10.00 to 19.33 €) |
| Amber jar | 125 ml | 26.32 € | 21.06 € | 27.23 € from 76 to 130 g or ml (19 products: 8.33 to 47.90 €) |
| Bamboo jar | 50 g | 23.92 € | 47.84 € | 49.80 € for 50 g or ml and less (5 products: 29.98 to 60.21 €) |
| Raw tallow (raw material) | 1 kg | 22.45 € | 2.25 € | Outside the survey: it is not a ready-to-use balm |
In practice: the large 150 g jar sits below the overall median (29.16 €) and only 6 products out of 39 are cheaper per 100 g; the 125 ml amber jar (available unscented or scented) sits below the median of its range; the small 50 g bamboo jar, designed for the pocket and for discovery, is within the range of jars of this size. Prices per 100 g for jars of 50 ml and less are structurally higher across the whole survey, whatever the brand.
To choose: the beef tallow balm hub presents the whole range, the face collection the sizes used most every day, and the barometer places these prices in the European tallow market.
How to read these figures
These figures describe what sellers display on a given day, on a sample of 39 products; they measure neither the quality, nor the effectiveness, nor the popularity of a product. Prices change (promotions, stock-outs), the sample is not exhaustive and France accounts for only 2 products surveyed, which allows no national conclusion. “Not stated” information simply means that the page does not give it. For cosmetic claims, we stick to what European law allows: a tallow balm moisturises, nourishes, softens the skin and supports its skin barrier.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an official test or a “Testsieger” for beef tallow creams?
No, to our knowledge. As of 12 October 2026, no comparison from an independent institute has been found; a German magazine wrote the same day that no independent institution has systematically compared these products. If a product displays “Testsieger”, look for the source of the test.
What is the best beef tallow cream?
We name no “best” product: that would be a ranking that nothing allows us to establish. The right choice depends on your skin, the season, the fragrance you want and your budget per 100 g. Our 8-criteria checklist helps you compare two jars transparently.
What is the price of a beef tallow cream per 100 g?
In our survey of 39 products, the median is 29.16 € per 100 g or 100 ml, with a middle half between 19.25 € and 39.95 €. In the DACH region the median is 28.20 €. Jars of 50 ml and less are the most expensive per 100 g (median of 49.80 €).
Does a beef tallow cream contain water?
In the survey, none of the 30 listings whose formula is readable lists water: they are anhydrous balms, 100% fats. The word “cream” then describes the texture. To check it on a product, look for Aqua in the INCI list.
Are beef tallow creams scented?
Rarely: 28 listings out of 32 that state it (87.5%) are unscented and 4 are scented. At FrenchTallow, the large Nature jar and the amber jar exist unscented, and the amber jar also exists in scented versions.
Where can I buy a beef tallow cream or balm?
From specialist shops, producers or supermarkets, depending on the country. For sizes, prices and storage, see our article on buying, or go straight to the beef tallow balm hub.
Where can I find reviews and first-hand experiences?
Customer feedback is gathered in our reviews article, with the method used to present it. A review is not a test, but it usefully complements a price survey.
Have Stiftung Warentest, 60 Millions de consommateurs or Que Choisir tested tallow creams?
We found no beef tallow cream test at Stiftung Warentest, Öko-Test, 60 Millions de consommateurs, Que Choisir or Consumentenbond as of 12 October 2026. The Austrian VKI published a “Kosmetikcheck” on 26 March 2026 covering a single product, which is not a comparison.
Is this page a test?
No. It is a market survey: we did not try the products and we do not rank them. We publish aggregated statistics on public data (price, volume, declared composition) read on 9 and 12 October 2026.
In summary
No official test has ranked beef tallow creams to date; what can be compared seriously are the prices per 100 g, the displayed formula and the seller's transparency. The survey shows a market of anhydrous balms, mostly unscented, at around 29 € per 100 g, where the size of the jar weighs more than the brand. To choose yours, start from your use (face, body, travel), calculate the price per 100 g, then discover our grass-fed beef tallow balms, in a large Natural jar, an amber jar or a bamboo jar.
