Good news: there is no « best » fat in absolute terms, only the fat best suited to your skin and your need. In this guide (updated June 2026), we honestly compare beef tallow with its main alternatives — plant-based and animal — based on their actual composition and on what cosmetic science says, to help you decide with confidence.

In short: beef tallow is rendered and purified beef fat, used as a nourishing fat. Its fatty acid profile (oleic, palmitic, stearic) and the cholesterol it contains bring it close to the lipids naturally present at the skin's surface, which explains its success as an emollient skincare.

What is a skincare « fat », and how does it work?

A skincare fat works mainly in three complementary ways. Understanding these three roles is the key to comparing any ingredient.

Tallow, shea, lanolin and « heavy » oils play mainly an occlusive and emollient role: they nourish, soften and help limit water loss. Light oils « close to sebum » such as jojoba or squalane are mainly emollients that blend into the surface film without forming a thick layer. The skin barrier itself is built from three families of lipids — ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids — in roughly equal proportions4, which explains why lipids « recognised » by the skin are so popular in cosmetics.

What exactly is beef tallow for the skin?

Short answer: beef tallow is rendered and purified beef fat. For the skin, its distinctive feature is a lipid profile close to the surface lipids of the epidermis, paired with a good richness in fat-soluble vitamins when the animal is grass-fed.

According to the USDA database, its fatty acid composition is dominated by oleic acid (≈ 35-40 %), palmitic acid (≈ 25-28 %) and stearic acid (≈ 13-19 %), with a small fraction of palmitoleic acid8. Now, oleic acid and the palmitoleic acid family are precisely among the fatty acids found in human sebum3: this is the origin of the widely held idea of a fat « close to the skin ». Added to this is cholesterol, naturally present in tallow, which is also one of the three lipids that make up the skin barrier.

In practice, tallow is a nourishing and emollient skincare: it provides fatty acids and cholesterol that the skin « recognises », helps soften and comfort the skin, and contributes to limiting water loss. Beef tallow or shea butter: which should you choose?

Short answer: choose shea butter if you want a plant-based (and vegan) butter, rich in vitamin E and plant compounds; choose tallow if you prefer a fat whose profile is closer to the skin's surface lipids and that is particularly stable.

Shea butter (from the nuts of the Vitellaria paradoxa tree) is dominated by stearic and oleic acids, and stands out for an unusually high unsaponifiable fraction (≈ 5-17 %) — far more than most oils — rich in triterpenes, tocopherols (vitamin E) and phytosterols9. It is an excellent emollient with an occlusive effect and a rich feel. Tallow, for its part, is a fat of animal origin: its strength is not the unsaponifiable fraction but its kinship with skin lipids (fatty acids + cholesterol) and its great stability.

Beef tallow or plant oils (jojoba, squalane, argan, coconut)?

Short answer: plant oils are generally lighter than tallow. Choose them if you want a fluid, quickly absorbed finish; choose tallow for a richer, occlusive and nourishing skincare, especially in winter or on very dry areas.

  • Jojoba oil: botanically it is not an oil but a liquid wax (≈ 97-98 % wax esters)10. As sebum also contains wax esters, jojoba is often described as « sebum-mimetic ». Light feel, very stable.
  • Squalane: this is the stable (hydrogenated) form of squalene, a lipid naturally present in sebum. Today mostly of plant origin (olive, sugar cane). An « identical to skin » emollient, with a dry, elegant finish.
  • Argan oil: rich in oleic and linoleic acids and in tocopherols (vitamin E)11. Highly prized, but richer in polyunsaturated fatty acids, and therefore more sensitive to oxidation than tallow.
  • Coconut oil: very saturated and occlusive, with a high comedogenic rating (often given as ≈ 4/5)12; lovely on the body and hair, to use with care on faces prone to oiliness.

What these fatty-acid-rich oils and tallow have in common: they all provide lipids that support the skin's comfort and suppleness9b. The difference is mainly a matter of texture and stability.

Beef tallow or lanolin: what's the difference?

Short answer: both are fats of animal origin, occlusive and emollient. Lanolin (sheep's wool wax) is composed mainly of wax esters and wool alcohols and can absorb water; tallow is composed of triglycerides with a profile close to the surface lipids, without the wool alcohols.

Lanolin is one of the oldest emollients; it is very occlusive and has a particular ability to hold water. Its reputation as a « sensitising » ingredient mainly concerns older grades and skin that is already very damaged: recent dermatological data show low reaction rates, further reduced with modern purified lanolins17. Tallow, for its part, contains neither wool alcohols nor the residues associated with that reputation. Is tallow comedogenic? Understanding the comedogenic rating

Short answer: the « comedogenic rating » is a useful but imperfect guide, and tolerance is above all individual. Tallow is designed mainly for dry, normal and mature skin; skin prone to oiliness should apply it in a thin layer or favour a light texture.

The comedogenic scale (from 0 to 5) comes from old tests and has since been widely criticised: a review published in 2025 in JAAD Reviews notes that it has limited clinical value and should not be read as an absolute measure of the risk of breakouts13. In other words, the same ingredient can suit one person's skin and not another's. The most reliable approach is to listen to your skin: test on a small area, apply just the right amount, and adapt. Why does tallow keep so well?

Short answer: because it contains very few polyunsaturated fatty acids, the most sensitive to oxidation. That is what gives it good stability over time.

How quickly a fat goes rancid depends mainly on its level of polyunsaturated fatty acids: the more a material contains, the faster it oxidises19. Tallow is composed half of saturated fatty acids and contains only ≈ 2-4 % polyunsaturated ones; its iodine value, measured at 28-30 in a 2021 study, is low, a sign of low unsaturation and good resistance to rancidity2. Conversely, oils rich in linoleic acid (such as argan) require more care in storage. This is one of the practical advantages of tallow as a skincare base.

Which fat is the most sustainable and the most ethical?

Short answer: each family has its arguments. Tallow has the advantage of making use of a co-product; shea is plant-based and supports women-led supply chains; mineral ingredients (petroleum jelly, mineral oil) are of fossil origin.

  • Tallow: it is rendered from fat that would otherwise be lost — a « nose-to-tail » and zero-waste logic that makes use of a material from an already existing production.
  • Shea: renewable, harvested in agroforestry parklands, it provides a living for many women's cooperatives in West Africa; its supply chain calls for careful management of the trees.
  • Petroleum jelly / mineral oil: very effective and stable, but of fossil origin, and therefore non-renewable.
  • Vegan? Tallow and lanolin are of animal origin (not vegan); shea, jojoba, squalane and plant oils suit a vegan routine. It's a choice of values, not a judgement of quality.

Can you make your own skincare with tallow?

Short answer: yes. Raw tallow is an excellent base for homemade balms and cold-process soaps, because it makes products that are firm, gentle and stable.

In soap-making, tallow is a great classic: it produces a hard, long-lasting bar with a creamy lather, and its saponification value is well known and predictable (≈ 0.140 in sodium hydroxide for a solid soap)21. For a balm, you simply melt it, optionally with a little beeswax and an oil. Compared with coconut (which hardens and cleanses) or olive (gentle but slow to harden), tallow brings firmness and conditioning at the same time. FAQ: your questions about choosing a fat

Does beef tallow smell of beef?

No. A well-rendered and purified tallow is almost odourless. That is precisely why it serves as a neutral base: it carries fragrances and essential oils perfectly, as in our scented balms.

Is tallow suitable for skin prone to oiliness?

Tolerance is individual. Skin prone to oiliness can use it in a very thin layer, preferably in the evening, or favour a light texture such as jojoba or squalane. Tallow is at its best on dry, normal and mature skin.

Is shea butter better than tallow?

Neither better nor worse: different. Shea is the plant-based option rich in vitamin E and unsaponifiables; tallow has a lipid profile closer to the skin's surface lipids and better stability. The right choice depends on your preferences (plant-based or not) and on your skin.

Is beef tallow vegan?

No, it is a fat of animal origin (a co-product of livestock farming). For a vegan routine, turn to shea butter, jojoba, squalane or plant oils.

Can you apply tallow to the face?

Does tallow go off quickly?
